A physical first half set the tone before Germantown’s late surge sealed the win.

Germantown,MS—Friday, Jan 30

Friday night’s matchup between Murrah and Germantown delivered intensity from the opening tip, but Germantown’s second-half surge—led by a dominant performance from Funches—proved decisive in a 55–46 victory on Jan. 30 at Germantown High School.

Germantown carried a 25–15 lead into halftime, though the margin didn’t fully reflect the tone of the game. Murrah came out aggressive and unafraid, led by Xavier Thompson, who set the tone early by scoring the first three baskets of the game directly against Funches.

Despite lacking a true post presence, Murrah committed to making life difficult for Germantown’s star throughout the first half. The Patriots mixed defensive looks, played physical on both ends, and forced Funches into contested attempts around the rim, preventing Germantown from pulling away early.

The momentum shifted quickly after halftime.

Funches returned with a different level of aggression, attacking the paint and finishing through contact. He began converting the floaters and hook shots he missed in the first half, and the energy in the gym changed instantly when he opened the second half with a powerful, hard-driving poster dunk.

Murrah continued to battle, with Thompson leading the charge offensively and refusing to back down in the head-to-head matchup. Thompson finished with approximately 18–22 points, consistently applying pressure and competing possession by possession.

Still, Germantown’s execution began to separate as the game wore on.

In the fourth quarter, Germantown took control, stringing together defensive stops and timely baskets to stretch the lead to nearly 14 points—its largest of the night. From there, Germantown controlled the tempo and closed the door.

Funches finished with 30-plus points, delivering a statement performance when his team needed it most. Murrah, meanwhile, left with positives after a gritty, physical effort that tested Germantown for much of the night.

In the end, Germantown’s second-half adjustments and late-game composure proved to be the difference, turning a competitive battle into a decisive win.
